Manual Therapy for Flexibility and Pain Reduction:
Soft Tissue Mobilization – This hands-on treatment involving gentle pressure helps to break down, or reduce, fibrous or scar tissue; improve range of motion; decrease pain; disperse inflammation, effusion and edema; and to increase function. You get to actively participate in this method of therapy.
For you, this is a “passive” activity. With you relaxed, we perform a series of gentle stretches in a smooth, rhythmic fashion to the individual joints. There's no fast thrusting, no sudden moves. Slower movement allows the joint to be taken further, to stretch and massage the connective tissue in and around the joint.
Myofascial Release treats tightness in injured tissue by stretching small areas of muscle at a time.
The physical therapist finds the area of tightness/soreness and a light stretch is applied. The therapist waits for the tissue to relax and then increases the stretch. The size and sensitivity of sore spots will decrease with treatment. Most clients are surprised by the gentleness of myofascial release and find it very relaxing.
Therapeutic Exercise and Activities:
We believe strongly in exercise as a component of your recovery. As part of an active rehabilitation program, all patients participate in therapeutic exercise in our well equipped gym and private treatment rooms. We’ll teach you a personalized, comprehensive plan combining in-office and at-home techniques and guide you every step of the way.
This is a practice used to improve balance, coordination, posture, and your own sense of “correct movement and positioning” of your body. It’s a learning process that focuses on the connection of the mind to the body and may incorporate balancing exercises, strength training, relaxation, biofeedback, and movement therapy.
From everyday walking around the house following surgery to competitive running techniques, everything from how your feet hit the ground to your core strength can affect the biomechanics of ambulation. We can identify problems and help your correct your gait through physical therapy.
